In addition to such direct impacts as habitat loss and fragmentation, humans are also subtly altering the structure and function of natural ecological systems and vegetation communities through the introduction of exotic or invasive species, changes in wildfire, hydrological, biogeochemical cycling and climate regimes. One of the only feasible means of counteracting these trends is to promote broader scale vision and policies that transcend arbitrary human political divisions and encompass connected, functioning ecological systems at the scale of landscapes or regions, what some have called a 'bioregional approach.'
