The Barnegat Bay Watershed and Estuary Habitat Tour

By synthesizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) maps, selected species lists and ground photography, one can gain an understanding of the coastal land cover habitats and appreciate the value of CRSSA's on-going research activities which utilize GIS technology. This tour is derived from our Data Synthesis Project for the Barnegat Bay Estuary Program.

Note: Monitor size and display preferences will determine how much of each page can be viewed at one time. Keep in mind that the legend and image frames can be resized to meet user needs.

How did CRSSA create the maps found in this tour?
The Barnegat Bay Habitat Maps were developed through the interpretation and analysis of a variety of sources including  Landsat Thematic Mapper satellite imagery, aerial photography,  land use/land cover and state/national wetland digital data. The primary data set for the upland/watershed map was a series of Landsat Thematic Mapper images from 1994 and 1995. The benthic aquatic habitat maps were developed from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services National Wetland Inventory, several submerged aquatic vegetation survey maps, and bathymetry derived from the NOAA nautical chart for Barnegat Bay.  The benthic aquatic and upland/watershed habitat maps were combined to create one seamless habitat map for the entire Barnegat Bay ecosystem.

Are there other habitat tours and maps available?
Yes, for other graphical products of the Barnegat Bay region, go to the CRSSA 'Gallery'.  For additional Barnegat Bay resources, check out CRSSA's Barnegat Bay web site.
