Abstract:
The Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in Barnegat Bay - 1979 shapefile (sav79.shp) was created
as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal Habitat Conservation - Barnegat Bay'
study. This study focused on the loss of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) that is occuring
in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification and decreasing water quality in the bay and
watershed. The digital source for sav79.shp  is the Arc/Info coverage 'sav795m', which itself
was originally an Arc/Info grid, rasterized at a five meter ground cell resolution in Arc/Info
(ver 7.x) from the source vector GIS data for SAV raster GIS manipulation, analysis, etc. in
Arc/Info 7.x and ERDAS IMAGINE 8.x at CRSSA. The source vector GIS data was generated
at CRSSA by digitizing a paper base map series of submerged aquatic vegetation delineated and
mapped on 1979 1:24,000 black and white aerial photography formatted/tiled to the 7.5 minute
United States Geological Survey quadrangle series.  The submerged aquatic vegetation was
mapped by Robert T. Macomber and Dick Allen in 1979 and released as part of 'The New
Jersey Submerged Aquatic Vegetation Distribution Atlas Final Report' (Macomber and Allen,
1979).
Purpose:
The sav79.shp was created as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal Habitat
Conservation - Barnegat Bay' study. This study focuses on the loss of submerged aquatic
vegetation (SAV) that is occuring in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification and
decreasing water quality in the bay and watershed across time.  CRSSA has also compiled
earlier and subsequent SAV studies conducted in the 1960's, 1980's, and 1990's and created
shapefiles to facilitate habitat loss assessment in Barnegat Bay.
