Abstract:
The Submerged Aquatic Vegetation in Barnegat Bay - 1968 shapefile (sav68.shp) was created
as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal Habitat Conservation - Barnegat Bay'
study. This study focuses on the loss of submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) that is occuring
in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification and decreasing water quality in the bay and
watershed. The shapefile was digitized in an effort to document and assess long-term trends
of habitat loss in the Barnegat Bay region. The areas delineated in this coverage were digitized
from the Army Corps of Engineers and the State of New Jersey's 1968 Aquatic Plant Survey
Area Map. The map was included as part of Design Memorandum #1 of the Aquatic Plant
Control Project for the State of New Jersey, submitted in March 1976. It should be noted that the
purpose of this document was to investigate problems associated with "excessive aquatic plant
growth" and to determine methods to resolve the perceived problem. Areas of overly abundant
sea lettuce, eelgrass, and wigeongrass growth were deemed "infested" and in most cases these
species were considered weeds. These aquatic plants were described as "nuisances to navigation,
recreation, and public health". Sav68.shp  was created through the digitization of aquatic plant
delineations mapped in the 1968 Aquatic Plant Survey Map. The digitized areas were subsequently
compared with the NJDEP "coast" coverage (editted to coastply2) to ensure spatial accuracy.
Purpose:
The sav68.shp was created as part of the 'Landscape Scale Approaches to Coastal Habitat
Conservation - Barnegat Bay' study. This study focuses on the loss of submerged aquatic
vegetation (SAV) that is occuring in Barnegat Bay as a result of human modification and
decreasing water quality in the bay and watershed across time.  CRSSA has also compiled
other subsequent SAV studies conducted in the 1970's, 1980's, and 1990's and created
shapefiles to facilitate habitat loss assessment in Barnegat Bay.

Sav68.shp was created through the digitization of aquatic plant delineations mapped in the 1968 Aquatic
Plant Survey Map. Forty-three ground control points were established by comparing the source map (1968 Aquatic
Plant Survey) to a reference image (NOAA nautical chart image 123161.img) using Erdas Imagine. The SAV68
coverage was then compared to existing Arc/Info coverages of Barnegat Bay and the New Jersey coastline
(coastply2) to ensure spatial accuracy. The original paper source map had no graticule and was not geo-referenced.
