  • What You Own - Site shows amount of land used for different planning sites in any state in the United States. For example, in N.J. 53,910.02 acres of land are currently used as parks. I think that the information the this site provides could be very helpful to environmental planners so that they are aware of the types and amounts of landuses that are already in their states *SBS
  • Planned Unit Developments - This site involves an explanation of what a Planned Unit Development(PUD) is, and its relevancy in the planning process. Also given is an example of a case involving PUD, Davis Group MC v The Metropolitan Government, taken place in Tennessee. This is a good site for the fact that you may receive a good understanding of what a PUD is, and its function in planning. *SBS

  • U.S. Geological Survey "G.I.S." - This page describes Geographic Information Systems technology which is used by the government for scientific investigations, resource management, and development planning. The fascinating G.I.S. performs a number of interesting tasks including the calculation of emergency response time in the event of a natural disaster. *SBS
  • Floods in the Grand Canyon - simulated a flood by releasing a controlled flow of water for seven days from Glen Canyon Dam. The experiment was performed to mobilize the sediments from bottom of the Colorodo River and re-deposit them in eddies and near shore areas. *SBS

Contents include a downloadable copy of the entire Act itself, state lists of listed plants and animals, photos of endangered species, answers to frequently asked questions, and policy issues. *SBS

Total of benefits provided by natural systems was estimated to be $33 trillion, mostly stemming from aquatic ecosystems. *SBS
  • Federal Register - Environmental Subset - The Federal Register Environmental Subset contains the full-text of selected Federal Register documents that deal with the environment or environment-related issues. These documents are downloaded from the Government Printing Office (GPO) WAIS server, which maintains the official electronic version of the Federal Register. The documents are then posted to the U.S. EPA's gopher and web servers on a daily basis. *SBS
  • EPA's Brownfield's Page - This site describes the government's work to deal with the problem of "Brownfields", that is, abandoned industrial or commercial sites where redevelopment is complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination. Included is a description of a $200,000 pilot project in Elizabeth NJ for the economic revitalization of 5 sites. *SBS
  • Why Building energy efficiency matters - Buildings use 36 percent of Americas energy. This takes 75 percent of energy production by nuclear power plants. Energy use in buildings has a big impact on economy spending 200 million dollar every year. A 30 percent improvement in efficiency would reduce bills by 100 million dollars and buildings are outlasting power plants. *SBS
  • U.S. Bureau of Land Management - Provides updated information on BLM regarding mining, petroleum research, land use, land acquisitions. The "mission statement" is of interest for its focus on the "productivity of public lands for the use and enjoyment of future generations." Well written text explains the history of the BLM. *SBS

  • Citizens for the Preservation of Property Rights - This site involves information, as well as accomplishments, about Citizens for the Preservation of Property Rights; which is a private property rights group in Colorado. This is good site for viewing how it is important for the public to be informed about planning proposals and activities, and how to participate in the protection of private property rights. *SBS

Discusses forestry protection of various park land, mining and how land is misused, and how to properly manage and protect. Info for anyone interested in protection and use of major lands. *SBS
  • Bay Area Green Web - This site contains, among other things, information on EcoCity Planning and the group Urban Ecology. UE publishes a journal of the same title, dedicated to Ecological Urban Planning from the Bay Area to all over the world. In addition to being a networking group, UE has, in cooperation with local and regional governments and businesses, produced a document titled "Blueprint for a Sustainable Bay Area", which outlines the goals, methods, as well as examples of EcoCity planning.   • Future Generations - An International NGO that works for an environmentally sustainable future. Their current focus is on the Tibet region of China. Provides their theories, methods, and concentrations about existing and proposed nature preserves, social programs and human development. *SBS
  • The Electronic Drummer - This site is a computerized newsletter from the Thoreau Institute. It includes exerpts from the magazine, "The Different Drummer," but mostly, and more importantly, it responds to Henry David Thoreau's call for more environmental preservation without the involvement of big government. This site explores the many possiblities offered in that statement. *SBS
  • Megacities 2000 Foundation - A group that recognises the growth of cities and the rising population growth and sees a need to consider new ways of structuring cities for this future growth. Contains lectures, theories, and biographies of their founders. *SBS
  • Science and the Environmental Biodiversity and Wildlife Conservation - This newsletter in the web presents news on a variety of topics including endangered species, land use policies, national parks and wetlands among others. From the homepage you can read about different topics relating not only to land use but other issues that effect the land as well *SBS
  • Cottonwood - The Cottonwood Foundation-- A charitable foundation that is bent upon empowering the national public with environmental decisions, and an outright respect for cultural diversity. Covers issues such as struggling volunteer organizations and ideas on how to make a difference in your area. *SBS
  • Resource Renewal Institute - Through this site you have access to Green Plans world wide. This method of environmentally sensitive planning, which focuses on long-term and comprehensive strategies, is being implemented in New Zeeland, the Netherlands, Singapore, and many other countries. An atlas directory by continent is included. *SBS

  • Island Resources Foundation - Island Resources Foundation is a private, non-profit research and education organization based at Red Hook in St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, dedicated to solving the environmental problems of development in small tropical islands. It is a site which disseminates information as well as asking for participation and membership from those who come across the site. Nice photos! *SBS

  • Keep America Beautiful, INC.- A site dedicated to preserving the natural environment in American communities. *SBS
  • Hudson River Watertrail Assosication - A coalition who are interested in the Hudson River. A non-profit environmental and recreational action group. Their specific goal is building a river trail from the Atlantic Ocean to Canada by promoting a low impact approach to the river. A good site because it shows that additions to the land can be done and without a lot of harm to the environment. *SBS
  • League of Conservation Voters- They call themselves the nonpartisan political arm of the environmental movement. Their work is toward electing a pro conservation majority in Congress. They even have polling information on how main stream Americans place priority on environmental protection. A great web site especially with elctions and primaries drawing close. *SBS
  • Commitee for Green Foothills - Community based organization that advocates the protection and preservation of the environmental integrity of the San Francisco Bay Area. They're active in influencing land-use decisions and policy making. *SBS
  • NAEP - This site is the National Association of Environmental Professionals. This site provides for the user a place to explore the internet for env. resources, build virtual teams, and to resource current documentation. *SBS

  • Internet Law Library - The US House of Representatives has an internet site dealing with environmental, natural resource, and energy law. There is a large list for every state proposal, order, code, or act dealing with environmental issues. there is a NJ code about Conservation and Development-Parks and Reservations, also regulations governing magnetic fields from electric power lines. But to get more information one must have a username and password. To be given access one must sudscribe to the publications. The common man that these laws may affect does not have easy access. *SBS
  • CTSY: Plan Law -This site delves into the literature of the many laws associated with the environmental planning field. It gives a good case study of many cases that their clients have gone through and explain the process in planning and staying within the law. *SBS
  • The World Wide Web Virtual Law Library - Contains information on just about every law imaginable. I choose this site because it has information on property laws and environmental laws. Good page for this class. *SBS

  • The Kentucky River Authority - The agency regulating the entire Kentucky River Basin with particular interest in protecting the river's dams and water level. Besides describing the KRA's unusual regulatory power, this site includes land use maps and historic photos.
  • Town of Owl's Head, Maine - Comprehensive Plan and Goals Policy, This site is very interesting because it outlines the exact goals and policies that an actual town wishes to accomplish and has set up policies to protect and conserve *SBS
  • California State Lands Commision - Creates solutions for school lands, land grants and hazard removal just to name a few. It also serves up statistics on the growth of that region. *SBS
  • Swedish Environmental Protection Agency - This page gives some insight on the works of Sweden's Environmental Protection Agency. See how this organization, similar to our own EPA works in a very distinct environment. *SBS
  • DEPARTMENT of the ENVIRONMENT - A British government organization responsible for "planning" projects throughout Europe. Gives insight on environmental planning outside the United States. *SBS
  • Sustainable Cities Programme - A joint facility of the UN Center for Human Settlements and UN Environmental Program. They conduct city renovation and planning projects on numerous cities in developing countries. *SBS
  • Texas Natural Resource Conservation Commission - The TNRCC Web site provides information on pollution prevention, emergency response, enforcement, permitting, technical assistance, sampling/monitoring, small business assistance, recycling, air quality, water resources and waste management. *SBS

  • International Institute for Environment and Development - Environmental Planning Group - EPG combines inter-disciplinary research on the mechanisms and tools for sustainable development planning, from national to local level, with the development of methodologies for the application of environmental planning. *SBS This site allows visitors to see what IIED is all about, what they do, and how to get ahold of them. With courses such as environmental planning, forestry, and sustainable agriculture, a visitor gets a brief summary of each course and what it entails. *SBS An U.K. based environmental planning group which combines inter-disciplinary research on the mechanisms and tools for sustainable development planning, from national to local level, with the development of methodologies for the application of environmental planning. *SBS
  • Planning, Environment and Lands Bureau - As a Hong Kong native, I strongly recommend this site for the prospective planners because maintaining the integrity of environment and land resource allocation is a great challenge in such a highly populated and business-oriented region. Knowing more about the land-use issues in HK is beneficial for American planners to work on our communities. *SBS
  • Land Use Planning Issues in Oregon - This site is designed to provide information regarding land use issues in the state of Oregon. It deals with urban development, land protection and explains many of the issues being dealt with by state officials. *SBS - The Department of Land Conservation and Development is responsible for monitoring and implementing the state of Oregon's Land Use Planning Program. The main purpose of the program is to improve Oregon's quality of life through sound land use planning. To enjoy this site one must like very in depth information, not for the novice. *SBS
  • City of Palo Alto: Environmental - What a small city full of yuppies in California is doing in terms of programs to protect and enhance their environment. There's a newsletter that details the hazardous materials incidents in the area as well as other interesting events. *SBS
  • Env Plan Aerial Photo - This site gives aerial pictures of different environmental planning projects involved in Chesire County. Pictures are worth a thousand words but beware long download time. *SBS
  • Seattle Information for citizens and Communities - Offers a great deal of information to the average person. Everything from the budget, to what is being planned at the present moment, to who is on the different boards. *SBS
  • Dade County Natural Areas Mapping-This site shows how the Metro-Dade Department of Environmental Resource Management is involved in evaluating and mapping natural areas, both upland and wetland, to support environmental planning, habitat restoration activities, and natural areas management activities. *SBS
  • "Cultivating Solutions" - A report to the Prince Edward Island roundtable on resource land use and stewardship. The Regulating the use of Resource Lands section of the publication is of particular interest for land planning and zoning concerns on the island. *SBS

  • EnviroSense - Common Sense Solutions to Environmental Problems-- This site attempts to provide a single stop for the public's quest for knowledge on topics such as pollution prevention, all the way down to environmental data bases. It includes studies, higher technologies, governmental policies and, most importantly, a large number of solvent alternatives for this country, today. *SBS
  • Zoning Ordinance Index- A site of zoning ordinances of Gurnee, Illinois. You are able to access their zoning ordinance index. *SBS
  • Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments COG has environmental programs which tells of all new happenings in DC. They also have transportation planning which lets you know the types of new efforts they are making towards transportation. *SBS
  • Community and Environmental GIS - This site offers information about the Houston-Galveston Area Council's(H-GAC) Geographic Information System(GIS), the regions most comprehensive geospatial database for Community and Environmental Planning. The site discusses the applications of the modern GIS system. Also, the useful services provided by H-GAC. This site is relevant in that it promotes this modern GIS system which provides a wide range of information relating to the environment and land use, and its easy accessibility. *SBS
  • The Planning and Zoning Law of California This site allows a visitor to see local planning laws by summarizing California's laws and statutes. This site also illustrates what the legislative bodies are to do in planning, their powers and esponsibilities. *SBS
  • Veteran's Bond Act -Veterans' Bond Act of 1996 -- in the State of California, the act provides for four hundred million dollars to provide farm and home aid for Ca. veterans. Discusses arguments for and against proposal. Important info for limited segment of population. *SBS
  • Anchorage Community Planning and Development - Can find out commercial zoning areas, when the planning commission meets, etc. Lots of info, including maps for sale as well as previews of the maps. *SBS
  • CalEPA-California Environmental Protection Agency-- This is an organization that is dedicated to educating the public about tough environmental issues facing California today. Spanning topics dealing with Pesticide Regulations to Water Resource Control, this site leads you on an interesting path through California's Environmental pitfalls, and the opportunities open to people who care. *SBS
  • Farmland Preservation - Farmland Preservation-Lebanon County Conservation District -- The Agricultural Resource Coordinator of Lebanon County works with local farmers and other agencies to preserve farmland in the County. The site gives info on who qualifies, and how to apply. *SBS
  • National Estuary Program- Focuses on the significance of estuaries to both marine life and human life. The National Estuary Program (NEP) was established as part of a clean water act. The NEP brings communities together to decide the future of their own estuaries. *SBS
  • Austsralian Environment Committee. Australia's equivelant to our Department of the Interior. It was interesting to see that in a country thousands of miles away have the same problems we have. Their department also controls some zoning done in that country. *SBS
  • St. Regis Mohawk Tribe - This mohawk tribe in upstate New York has territory adjacent to a superfund toxic site. Their advanced environment division does environmental assesments and reviews. *SBS
  • Montgomery County Planning Commission Master Page - Gives an overview of what exactly the Mont. County planning commission does. Has various links to projects that they are in the process of performing. *SBS
  • California Resource Agency - This site is from the California resource agency. They can provide one with env. assessment documents, maps, and even spatial data of California. One should visit here to compare how different states practice env. planning. *SBS

  • U.K. Government planning - This is a site out of the United Kingdom that gives specific env. planning guidance. It tells how to be successful without breaking any laws. One should visit this site because they include descriptive case studies. *SBS
  • Arizona Geographic Information Council - This council coordinates geographic information systems in the State of Arizona, and make them available to government officials. The site explores their publications, news and events, a listserver, and subcommittee information. *SBS
  • Planning and Conservation League - The Planning and Conservation League (PCL) is a 30-year-old, statewide, nonprofit alliance of citizens and conservation organizations united to protect and restore the quality of California's environment through legislative and administrative action. *SBS
  • Boulder County TDR Program - Explains about TDR and how someone can get involved in the program. Also provides information about contacts, processes and benefits of becoming a TDR sending site. *SBS

  • Environmental Planning Geographic Informational Systems at Berkely - This site describes the University of California, Berkeley program of study in the environmental field, as well as the aims, objectives, and requirements of the program. Students who visit this become familiar with the requirements for env. planning outside of Rutgers and can become more aware of the competition and knowledge they are up against from students of U. of California. *SBS -Regis is a supporter of open computing hardware architecture, public-domain GIS software, and open access to digital information on the environment and land use. The REGIS research program is developing GIS tools and applying them in environmental planning, management, research, and teaching. This site may be useful for people who enjoy computers. *SBS
  • Energy & Environment - This site is a link from the University of Oregon. It contains links and information about resource conservation, Physics of Energy and the Enviroment, Alternative Energies and Renewable resources, Environmental Studies 202: Quantitative Methods in Environmental Studies and Global Warming and the Enhanced Greenhouse Effect. There are other topics which you can link to as well. *SBS
  • Department of Urban and Environmental Planning: Information-This web site is a select list of web sites useful for urban and environmental planners. Lists include professional associations, housing and community development, and environmental planning. *SBS
  • Toward Ecological Architecture - This page, while focused on architecture, includes ideas and links to the larger issues of environmental planning. See especially 313/EcoArch.fin.html, an article titled "the Ecological Paradigm in Architecture" for a thorough description of the competing Cartesian & Ecological worldviews, their historical trajectories, and the hope for (& evidence of) a shift to the latter. *SBS
  • City Beautiful Washington DC Plan- Information on the City Beautiful Movement, the 1901 plan for Washington DC, and the future of DC are all discussed at this site. The site goes in depth about the movement and the original maps and drawings of DC are excellent. *SBS
  • Campus and Environmental Planning at the University of California at IrvineThis is the site of the professional department of the university that does all of the planning and design for its campuses. The site explains their past and present projects in detail and is very graphical. *SBS
  • Friendly Urban Naturalists A college project to enhance wetlands, streams, and rivers. *SBS
  • Institute for Coastal Resource Management - ICRM provides expert consultancy services to organizations involved in the policy formulation, planning and assessment, policy implementation, and management functions for coastal resources in Australia and internationally. *SBS
  • UCLA Department of Urban Planning - This is the site of an accredited program in urban planning. Includes class descriptions and schedules, student organizations and frequently asked questions about the program. *SBS
  • Know Your Watershed - They have many avenues to view at this site, a newsletter, National Watershed Library, new releases, urban management practices and farm resources management. A excellent site, but make sure one has time to sit and stay a while. *SBS
  • WERC - This is a Waste-management Education and Research Consortium Home Page. WERC is a national program with innovative and exciting research and educational opportunities. Includes topics such as environmental design contests, energy issues, new technology and more. *SBS

  • The 705-414 Research Project - The Facility of Architecture, Building and Planning have dedicated a web page to their research project, labeled 705-414. This site contains actual work and research by planners in this field and is quite interesting. *SBS
  • National Watershed Network - This site describes what a watershed is, how they are found, how to become a member of a watershed partnership, etc. It gives relevant background information on a very real environmental issue. *SBS
  • The Institute for Environmental Negotiation - This site discusses a program, titled The Institute for Environmental Negotiation, which was established at the University of Virginia in 1981 to make mediation and consensus building services available to governments, citizen organizations and businesses dealing with conflicts and policy choices related to land use and the natural and built environments. Also included is a list and summary of projects currently underway and those completed through the institute. This site is informative in proposing problems related to environmental planning, and how they are being dealt with as well. *SBS
  • CUBE - Cube: The Center for Understanding the Built Environment -- A program that empowers kids to take responsible action in their community by bringing together educators with community partners, that will effect change leading to a quality built and natural environment. Hands on introduction to basic community design and planning principles. Newsletter. One of the only programs that gets kids involved. *SBS
  • Landscape Architecture - This page is useful to those interested in Landscape Architecture. This virtual library has information about education, careers and other related sites pertaining to Landscape Architecture. *SBS
  • Communication for a Sustainable Future - This site contains a comprehensive list of definitions and terminology in the environmental planning and ecology fields, and it is ideal for studying and referring back to from time to time. *SBS
  • Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plans-The planning and organization of a pollution prevention team. *SBS
  • University of Oregon solar radiation monitoring lab - Maintains solar monitoring stations in the N.W., dedicated to producing high quality solar radiation data for solar energy and climatic applications. *SBS
  • Plan for Ohio State University - This site involves illustration and description of existing to proposed modifications of land use with use of a master plan at Ohio State, and the role of the master plan in such a project. This may be beneficial in regards to viewing the importance of a master plan when proposing such a project. *SBS
  • The Oregon Land Use Information Center - The website includes 19 goals of planning and land use in Oregon. Each goal involves a different aspect of planning, for example, citizen involvement, land use, forestlands, estuarine resources etc. This site looks pretty interesting because it encompasses a variety of different places from forests to beached to dunes *SBS
  • Sprawl Net- Sprawl Net is a site through Rice University in Texas which is dedicated to the topic of urban sprawl. With solid book reviews and articles, and complementary graphics (book & magazine covers), this page is beautiful and professional. They take submissions, and are adding to it constantly. *SBS

  • Ecological Design Institute -Based just north of the San Francisco Bay in Sausalito California, Sym Van Der Ryn, Stuart Cowen, and others have come together to, in their words, "create innovate design solutions that link nature, culture, and technology to reintegrate the needs of human society within the balance of nature". In addition to an outline of the 5 principles of ecological design, their page includes pictures and discriptions of many of their projects, which while being focused on architecture take the landscape fully into account. See especially Chino Hills, Cowell Ranch, Marin Solar Village, Ojai Foundation School, and Wisconsin Street. The page also contains links to other schools and students of ecological environmental design. *SBS

  • Ethics of Environmental Planning-This is a good web site just for reading purposes. It provides the reader with ethical principles, one being to recognize the comprehensive and long-range nature of planning decisions and to maintain public confidence. Planners, with some of these principles, can be able to perform their valuable functions in our communities. *SBS
  • Environmental Policy, Planning and Management - This page is a creation of Sustainable Development Dimensions. It contains news about studies in sustainable agriculture and rural development as well as Earth Summit information and related links. *SBS
  • Integrated Transport Planning in Curitiba Brazil-This site describes the transport system of Curitiba, possibly the worlds best example of ecological, sustainable urban design applied to an existing city. Included are pictures, diagrams, and descriptions of both process, implementation, and evaluation of the plans: zoning and land use, road infrastructure, the bus system, pedestrian facilities, and more. The shape of the city is similar to the lobes described on the Mokum page. This site is part of the larger page run by the Center for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology, which is also worth a visit. *SBS

Represents 14,000 members, spanning building communities from code enforcement officials to material manufacturing, health, safety and welfare of communities. Publications, seminars and conferences.The place to go for info on local zoning codes and administration. *SBS
  • GREENlink! - An environmentally sensitive web page designed to let the user find any related green sites on the world wide web. Also provides lists of endangered species, companies that have endangered the environment, and various other oddities. *SBS
  • Sandhill Road... Will it go through? - Interesting page that details the conflicts surrounding a proposed development in Palo Alto that's pitting residents, the neighboring town, and Stanford University. Get to see the issues that are raised when a big time University wants to develop its land. With maps! *SBS
  • Mckee/Carson Service - This site is an environmental service outside of Charlottesville, VA. Their services include open space planning all the way to environmental impact studies. One should visit here to see their projects and their approaches. *SBS
  • Wild Eyed Media - This site makes people aware of the environmental needs and concerns. *SBS
  • Renewable Energy - This site deals with facts about energy use, reusable energy and emissions. It argues that there is a need to integrate energy sources. *SBS
  • VTT Automation Remote Sensing of Finland - This site shows the uses of remote sensing. Remote sensing uses satellite pictures to monitor forests and water quality. It is also useful for mapping. This site shows some of the current projects currently underway. *SBS
  • Protected Areas Virtual Library - This site defines what a protected area is and discusses campaigns to protect areas. It lists a number of links to other sites where more information is available concerning protected areas. A little vague, but a good place to start. *SBS

  • Villa D'Este - The homepage of the amazing Italian villa, including photos, a history, and information about reservations and conferences. A classic in design and planning. *SBS
  • inadequate drainage - This site talks about the hazards of inadequate land drainage such as local flooding and standing water *SBS
  • simulating fire patterns in heterogeneos landscapes - Site discusses development of a computer fire simulation(embyr), an ecological model for burning the Yellowstone region. The purpose of this is to investigate the causes and consequences of large-scale fires. *SBS
  • California Smart Traveler - A guide to transportation in California. A site dedicated to get people out of their cars and onto their feet, bicycles, buses or rail systems. *SBS
  • Article on New Urbanism - A very thorough, well written article, clearly not objectively written. An invective against the dead patterns of our contemporary placeless cities and towns, the author discusses the emerging trends of Eco-Village Design and the New Urbanism as methods with which to heal our living places. The article contains a number of Hypertext links, making it a beautiful example of the possibilities for on-line journalism. *SBS
  • Real Estate Contamination - A company in Michigan that handles environmental issues. If you click under the first heading a display of an actual legal document about a case they were involved in appears. It involves the contamination of several counties in Michigan. *SBS
  • Roads, Rivers, and Obstacles - An Optimal two-dimensional Path Planning around roads, rivers,and obstacles. Optimal two-dimensional path planning around linear features for a mobile agent. *SBS
  • Car Free Cities - A page which presents a thorough description of radical, pedestrian-oriented urban design. While running the risk of extremism, going ever further than Christopher Alexander or the New Urbanists, it is a very well designed and informative site. Includes lobed, radial design, an emphasis on neighborhoods, narrow streets, mixed use, fast free transit, new freight transport ideas, etc. *SBS The author of this page believes that the cause of most city problems is cars. Ideas for designing an automobile-free city are presented. *SBS
  • Gold mines: the real cost - Mining of gold is costly to the environment by using cyanide the mining could pollute the Black Foot River, as it already has in the past. This could destroy its natural habitat, killing trout, which would also disrupt local economies. *SBS
  • Planning/Building - This site is a list of Client Assistance Memos to help people to comply with city zoning, building, fire and sign codes in Gig Harbor. It is interesting because if you live in this city you need to access this website to get all your information. *SBS
  • Onyx Group??? - This site is the best and my personal favorite. The planning section of this site offers actual plans that they have constructed. It's a definite winner. *SBS
  • ROW-Right of Way-- This site covers the many issues of infrastructure. It spans the many "pro's" and "con's" of big industry and it explores the possible environmentally sound ways that environmentalists and big builders can get along. *SBS
  • Heard Island Wilderness Reserve - Draft Management Plan - Plan to preserve the territory and manage the environment and wildlife on the Heard and McDonald islands. *SBS
  • Poisoning Ourselves With Toxic Incinerators - This story talked about how the EPA knows that incineration produces a toxic chemical called dioxin, which stores and remains in the tissue of plants and animals, and how they have yet to solve this problem. *SBS
  • Eagle Lake on Orcas Island-Environmentally sensitive residential development located in Washington State. Focused on preservation, and stewardship of the land. *SBS

  • IDRC Environmental Planning Awards - This is an award a person can get in the Environmental Planning field. The project is evaluated in terms of criteria in which it achieves one or more of the following: 1) ecological harmony of the project with surrounding physical environment 2) visual harmony of the project witih surrouding physical environment.   • Arizona Plan Site - List of people who are involved in Arizona planning from cities and towns to the state government. *SBS
  • Better World Zine - Online magazine and concept site committed to environmental issues. Each monthly issue has a theme--corporate responsibility and saving the Utah Wilderness were the first two. In addition to articles, there are discussions, links for further studies and a survey. *SBS

  • gypsy moth - site explains how populations are typically eruptive in North America, causing trees to become defoliated. Several years in a row may cause tree mortality. Yearly about 1 million acres of forest are sprayed, however the USDA is studying alternative preventative methods. *SBS
  • Urban Growth Boundaries- This site discusses urban growth boundaries (factsheet). *SBS
  • Policy and Environmental Planning - Their strength is in community-based planning, working with local residents and exploring ways to achieve acceptable plans and development. It provides sound research and expert planning advice on the implementation of land-use planning policies. *SBS
  • National Association of Regional Councils - The National Association of Regional Councils (NARC) is a membership organization of regional councils (councils of government, regional planning and development agencies, etc.) across the country and provides opportunities for private- and civic- sector organizations interested in issues of regional planning, development and governance to participate. *SBS
  • COPAs PCB Clearinghouse - This site has Remediation Technologies, Health Effects, Regulations, and Superfund Case Studies. They have a list of articles, govt documents and links concerning PCBs. A good site to start research on environmental issues. *SBS
  • Chalk River Pipeline Study - A route for a 4" diameter gas pipeline to serve Chalk River Nuclear Research Laboratories. Key assessments were socio-economic and cultural impacts of alternative routes. *SBS
  • Hudson River NERR - National Estuarine Research Reserve -- explores the Hudson River estuary system bbetween Columbia and Rockland Counties, N.Y.; 100 mi., 5000 acres of tidal wetlands and uplands. Discusses management, lists of flora and fauna, maps, studies of specific areas, educational projects. Helpful especially if interested in this region. *SBS
