The Fundamentals in Environmental Geomatics course is designed to introduce undergraduate students to the concepts, technologies and techniques that allow us to better utilize large scale information and spatial data. Students majoring in the natural sciences, urban studies, landscape architecture, economics, marketing and a variety of other disciplines will benefit from taking this course. This course is also designed to provide the foundation for advanced course work and is the first in a three course Geomatics sequence tailored to provide students with hands on experience with various topics related to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing. This course is also a requirement for the Geomatics Certificate. In this course, we will cover basic concepts, definitions, and functions for each of the technologies associated with Geomatics. We will examine how each of these technologies are applied in different fields including urban planning, environmental and natural resource management, and economics to name only a few. We will also consider larger societal issues in this course including how the increasing use of geomatic technologies in public agencies, business and non-profit organizations has enabled decision managers and the public to make more informed decisions. Course Format: The course will be comprised of a series of lectures, quizzes, two exams, assignments and problem sets. The topic of this course is inherently a hands-on approach, however the size of the class precludes labs. In order to provide students with as much hands-on experience as possible, there are a number of small assignments and more involved problem sets that students will complete. Assignments and problem sets will entail hands-on experience with one of the software applications common to GIS (ArcGIS) as well as tapping into the wealth of information available through the Internet. back to topCenter
